K-12 Benchmarking Study & Audit 400 Locations | WA
In 2007, like many other publicly funded institutions, Washington State school districts were mandated to design and construct facilities according to a sustainable benchmark, known locally as the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol. Founded on LEED and CHPs (California’s version) criteria, this protocol was implemented with varying levels of success. In working with our 45+ long-term clients, we heard a common concern: post-occupancy performance. We responded with a voluntary study. Our team collected, analyzed and has published energy analytics from 25 participating Western Washington school districts, comprising of 400 schools and over 100,000 individual data points [Figure 1]. Several participating districts have utilized this information for subsequent capital improvements and successful energy grant/rebate applications to maximize their buying power.

Our specialists were engaged to evaluate proposed energy conservation measures targeted to reduce enterprise EUI by 20% by the year 2020.
Phase 1: Analyzed advanced lighting controls for existing parking lot fixtures and high-efficiency condensing furnace retrofits to their existing rooftop gas-pack units. Provided anticipated energy cost savings, implementation costs, and payback for all major US climate zones.
Phase 2: Identified capital-intensive energy conservation measures at an enterprise-level. Worked with specialists and stakeholder RCM team to collect and review data across the entire US fleet of over 5,000 stores.
Phase 3: Enterprise-wide evaluation of existing buildings' energy performance. Working directly with the RCM group to identify energy conservation measures that can be implemented in a prescriptive turn-key package to all 5,000+ stores.

We were retained to complete an energy analysis with the goal to increase awareness of individual store performance, as well as help prioritize stores that would benefit from further evaluation and/or onsite energy audits. We conducted an in-depth analysis of 5 stores scheduled for LED retrofits. We analyzed the potential effects of the higher-efficiency, lower-heat emitting LED fixtures' impact on the stores' existing climate controls if not adjusted for the reduced load.
